Three Cases of Murine Typhus Confirmed in Korea

Abstract

|
The authors could confirm murine typhus cases in Korea with detecting a rise in complement fixing and rickettsial agglutinating antibodies to Rickettsia typhi in sera of patient collected during convalescence. Antigens for this work prepared by method used in Walter Reed Army Institute of Research of the U.S. and macroscopic rickettsial agglutination technic were used. This experience, confirmed serologically as murine typhus, is for the first time in Korea even though the occurrences of murine typhus have been suspected. No differences were found on clinical signs and course between these cases and description of textbook, also no relapses were recorded by giving chloramphenicol total of five days duration. namely, 2.0 gms during the febrile stage followed by 1.5 gms after defervescence.
